In late June I’ll be doing something I’ve dreamed about doing for a long, long time – the Inca Trail! It’s a 4-day hike through the Andes, with Machu Picchu as the grand finale. I’m so excited for it that I keep forgetting I’ll have 24 more days in Peru on top of that!
Anyway, I’ve been doing a new hike every weekend to prepare myself and get in tip-top hiking shape. I’ll gradually be doing harder and harder hikes and packing more weight so that the Inca Trail isn’t quite as much of a shock. There’s nowhere in WA where I can hike up to 13,800ft without summitting the highest mountain in the state, so I can’t prepare for high-altitude hiking yet, but I’m doing my best!
Two weeks ago I hiked along Swakane Canyon, near Wenatchee. It was a really nice hike and the weather was perfect! The trail is a former dirt road, so the grade is nice and gradual. The views kept getting better and better the higher I went. The breeze scared all the bugs away, and there weren’t very many other people on the trail.
It was such an enjoyable day. I love hiking but I never used to do it all that often. In an average year I’d do 3-4 hikes, maximum. I’ve already done 3 this year and I’m planning to have 7 more under my belt before leaving for Peru. Swakane Canyon helped feed my new addiction! I recommend checking it out if you’re anywhere nearby.
